Abstract

The principal objectives of the WikiFactory project (the project is officially born at the "Ristoro delle Fate" restaurant smile ) is to define a framework that supports a semi-automatic process for the creation and the deployment of domain-based wikis. The framework consists of the following principal components:

  • the WikiFactory Application, which produces the specification and the implementation of wiki services by means of a user's description;
  • a QoS Manager component that is responsible for the configuration of a distributed platform, where the resulting domain-based wikis are hosted, and the deployment of those wikis in one such a platform.

Examples of Domain-based Wikis (Case Studies)

We define a domain-based wiki a wiki clone that provides ad-hoc services for a specific domain of knowledge. Examples of such domain-based wikis include:

  • A Personal Digital Library Wiki: This wiki is a system which helps a user to collect and organize digital documents, then publishing them online. For instance, suppose I have hundreds of PDF/other formats documents that I want to restructure and publish; the WikiFactory helps a user in organizing a CMS - content management system - well suited for this task, and probaly also a search agent to collect other documents similar to those I found.
  • WW (Workflow Wiki): A wiki clone that supports a workflow process. Given a process description, the WW provides the users with a set of predefined areas and services, which in turn support and guide the users (i) through the activities defined by the process and (ii) in the report creation.
  • CSW (Computer Science Department Wiki): A wiki clone that provides the users with ad-hoc services for managing such typical university department's activities as exams, calendars, projects, and so on.
  • PAW (Public Administration Wiki): A wiki clone that supports Public Service tasks.
